The Funen Village
In the Funen open-air museum - with rural structures from the 18th and 19th century - a complete village
environment has been recreated, with
half-timbered buildings, fences and farm
animals, village pond and village street. The museum tells the story of life in the country around the 1850s.
The Charity School
On the corner of Paaskestræde and Adelgade is the old charity school (Fattigskole). A memorial tablet tells us that it was here that the town’s famous poet, Hans Christian Andersen, attended school.
The building dates back to 1570 and was built in a typical renaissance style with storey overhangs.
The Washing Site
This is the washing site where Hans Christian Andersens mother - and indeed many others - did the washing for the upper class citizens. You can still see the stone slab they stood on.
